Give it the Cold Shoulder: How The Miracle Wave Technology Can Help Relieve Shoulder Pain

What most people call their “shoulder is actually a cluster of several joints combined with tendons and muscles to allow a wide range of motion in the arm—from scratching your back to throwing the perfect pitch.

Excessive use or strain of this part of the body, however, has its price... as it can lead to increasing problems with instability and impingement of the soft tissue or bony structures of your shoulder, resulting in pain.

Here are 5 of the most common problems which can cause shoulder pain along with a list of typical treatment methods:

1. Bursitis

The shoulder is made up of several bursa (small fluid sacs located near joints throughout our body). Bursae act as cushions between our bones and the soft tissues, but sometimes excessive use of your shoulder(s) can lead to inflammation and swelling of the bursae between the rotator cuff and the part of your shoulder blade known as the acromion. This condition can result in bursitis, associated with rotator cuff tendinitis.

General Treatment Methods

- reduction or changes in your daily and/or physical activities
- downtime or rest
- prescription/non-prescription medications
- surgery, in severe cases

2. Tendinitis

Tendon cords connect our muscles to the bones throughout the entire body. Frequent strain of these tendons in your shoulders, over time, can be just like wearing out the soles of your favorite shoes-- they can eventually split from overuse. There are two types of tendinitis:

a) acute tendinitis, which is caused by excessive use
b) chronic tendinitis, which is degenerative in origin (much like arthritis) and can worsen in pain as we age.

General Treatment Methods
- reduction or changes in your daily and/or physical activities
- physical therapy
- anti-inflammatory medications
- surgery, in some cases

3. Tendon Tears

The splitting and tearing of tendons, especially within your shoulders, can occur from:
a) degenerative changes in the tendons caused by age
b) long-term overuse
c) continuous wear and tear without appropriate treatment
d) a sudden injury

Tendon tears of the shoulder can be partial in damage but they can also split into two pieces where, in most cases, the tendon is actually pulled away from its attachment to the bone.

General Treatment Methods

- reduction or changes in your daily and/or physical activities
- downtime or rest
- medications for pain and/or inflammation
- surgery, in some cases

4. Impingement

This condition of the shoulder typically occurs when the top of the shoulder blade puts too much pressure on the underlying soft tissues, and the arm is lifted away from the body out of its normal range of motion, causing bursitis and tendinitis.

General Treatment Methods

- reduction or changes in your daily and/or physical activities
- downtime or rest
- medications for pain and/or inflammation
- surgery, in some cases

5. Arthritis

The most common type of arthritis of the shoulder is osteoarthritis, which is also known as "wear and tear arthritis." This condition often develops gradually but can involve increasing pain, significant swelling, stiffness of the arm and may eventually worsen over time if not treated correctly.

General Treatment Methods

- reduction or changes in your daily and/or physical activities
- downtime or rest
- medications for pain and/or inflammation
- surgery, in some cases
